BT5 & BT7

Postby jepari » Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:07 am

As far as I can tell neither the BT 5 or 7 were used very much during the Contination War ... What I'm somewhat "unclear" about ... was this due to the number / condition they were captured in - or was it due to them being considered "sub standard" ?

Considering the fact the Finnish Army what somewhat "under equipped" with armour I would have thought most of the captured BT's would be put to good use.

What use did the Finnish BT's see ? (before some were converted into BT-42's)

Not much really. A handfull of them were used during the fall of 1941, but since early 1942 "nothing" is heard of them.
Apparently (i.e. I don't know for sure) they weren't too reliable (tracks etc.) and the armament and protection weren't any better than the T-26 -series of tanks.

BT's

Postby jepari » Mon Oct 02, 2006 12:56 pm

Would the BT's have been used outside the "regular" armour formations ... with that I mean like in an Independent Platoon or Company ?
I've seen some footage where BT-5's are used in training Infantry/Jaegers in co operation with tanks.

I've also read a Soviet account where it was claimed thta the engines were somewhat unreliable ... being originally an aircraft engine which had been modified ...

And I noticed along the Salpa line there are a few BT's used as MG positions ... only the turet over the ground and the rear end of the tank "cut off"

I have seen the same pictures. The captions mentioned "the BT-platoon", but I don't think that that is the official name. I'll have to dig it up.
